Gridmates Partners with Foundation Communities
“Welcome to my world.”
Gridmates has partnered with Foundation Communities, a
local nonprofit, to provide 130 days of energy to its 8 Community
Learning Centers in the Austin area. These centers provide free after-school and summer
programs for 500 children as well as college prep and English as a Second
Language classes for adults.
Since 1990, Foundation Communities has empowered thousands
of families and individuals to achieve educational success, financial
stability, and healthier lifestyles. Each Community Learning Center works
closely with neighborhood schools and teachers to ensure that students are
meeting and exceeding their academic goals and to provide one-on-one support
for the students who need it most. The learning centers also engage parents in
their children’s education by encouraging their participation in the programs.
As a result, the children and teens served at their local Community Learning
Center excel at school and at least 85% maintain a B+ average or above. By providing
education programs where people live,
Foundation Communities eliminates the barriers of transportation, cost, and
childcare.

In addition to promoting
academic success, Foundation Communities targets childhood obesity
through fun fitness activities and education about health and nutrition. These
Community Learning Centers truly are the heart of their community, where
residents can gather and build lasting relationships.

Each Community Learning Center serves
approximately 70 students. The average monthly utility bill for each location
is $600-$700. That means a donation of just $10 can power a local
student's education for an entire month!
